Autoclave Classes: What’s the Difference??
Class N
Class N autoclaves use gravity displacement sterilization, where steam pushes air out of the chamber to sterilize instruments. These units are typically the most economical and simple to operate. They are best suited for solid, unwrapped instruments without complex internal spaces, as steam penetration is limited compared to higher-class units.
Class S
Class S autoclaves are a mid-range solution between Class N and Class B. They can sterilize some packaged, multi-layer, and more complex instruments depending on the model. Some units include vacuum-assisted cycles, offering improved steam penetration compared to Class N while maintaining moderate cost and versatility.
Class B
Class B autoclaves are the most advanced sterilization systems, using pre-vacuum and post-vacuum cycles to remove air and allow deep steam penetration. They are designed to sterilize wrapped, hollow, porous, and complex instruments, making them the preferred choice for practices requiring the highest sterilization performance and flexibility.
